U.S. and Israel on Security Cooperation

It is an undeniable fact that the Middle East is undergoing one of the worst periods of crisis in recent history. Civil war, regime collapse, mass emigration, and terrorism are but a few of the numerous problems facing the region. Moreover, the United States’ alliance with Israel has experienced its most turbulent period since the Suez Crisis of 1956 due to profound policy disagreements on the Iran nuclear agreement. Despite this strain, both American and Israeli officials emphasize that the need for close secu­rity cooperation between the two nations is more important than ever.

International Council Members Debate Critical Issues

Summer 2013

The Belfer Center launched its annual International Council meeting on April 9 with animated discussions of, among others, U.S. energy politics, the links between economic policy and national security, cybersecurity, and the rise of China. Participants included members of the Center's International Council and Board of Directors as well as faculty and senior fellows.

Paul Doty's Legacy Lives on Through Influential Journal

As soon as Paul Doty launched what is now Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs in 1974, he began planning a scholarly journal on international security. He shrugged off colleagues’ concerns that there would be little market for such a journal.Thirty-six years after the first issue appeared in the summer of 1976, the Belfer Center’s quarterly International Security consistently ranks No. 1 or No. 2 out of over 70 international affairs journals surveyed by Thomson Reuters each year.

Belfer Center Alums Launch Center for New American Strategy (CNAS)

Winter 2008-09

Kurt Campbell and Michèle Flournoy, both alums of the Belfer Center, founded The Center for a New American Strategy in February 2007. The organization has grown into an intellectual, nonpartisan national think tank focusing on national security and defense.

Economy and Security: Belfer Center Explores Vital Connections

Winter 2005-06

For more than 20 years, roundtables at the Belfer Center have had the benefit of contributions from 2005 Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics Thomas Schelling. Schelling, now at the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy, won the coveted prize for demonstrating the influence of economics on national security by applying game theory to the management of the Cold War. His contributions continue, along with those of others working at the Belfer Center on innovative solutions to economy/security issues.
