Paths Forward for Norway as New Chair of the Arctic Council

An excerpt from an interview with Fran Ulmer, Senior Fellow with the Belfer Center’s Arctic Initiative, explains what we might expect from the transition to Norwegian leadership, as well as possible paths forward for the Arctic Council and Arctic governance more broadly. In this Fall 2022 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter, our main feature focuses on Ash Carter and his legacy. Following Ash’s sudden death in October, tributes and remembrances poured in from current and former government officials and colleagues, students, and friends. Their many stories describe Ash’s impact on the country and on the people with whom he came in contact. Be sure to take a look at these moving remembrances.

Korea Project Conference Focuses on Complex Security Dynamics in Northeast Asia

A Belfer Center conference with the Seoul-based East Asia Institute (EAI) focused on U.S. priorities concerning the region’s security concerns amid other pressing global security challenges. Participants discussed impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war on the region and how to bolster U.S.-ROK cooperation on regional nuclear nonproliferation governance in light of the growing nuclear arsenals in China and North Korea.

Preventing Another Cuban Missile Crisis

The Belfer Center’s Project on Managing the Atom, Intelligence Project, and Applied History Project organized a day-long conference in October to mark the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis and to discuss what we’ve learned from the CMC. Managing the Atom’s Mariana Budjeryn discusses the relevance of those lessons for today’s conflict in Ukraine.
