Biography

Mohammed Al-Juaied is an Associate with the Belfer Center's Environment and Natural Resources Program and Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. He specializes in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS).

Al-Juaied is a Courtesy Professor of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Clean Combustion Research Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He is also a Senior Research Science Consultant at the Aramco Research Center, KAUST. Al-Juaied has over 25 years’ experience in R&D, technology development, commercialization, and project management. He served as Chief Technologist of the Carbon Management R&D Division at the Saudi Aramco Research Center, and as Chief Technology Officer of Aramco Energy Ventures where he was responsible for identifying, evaluating and making investment recommendations for emerging energy technologies including CCUS.

Al-Juaied is a company representative in the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative CCUS work stream. He has served as a committee member to many government and international organizations on CCUS initiatives, and as an official advisor to the Ministry of Energy during the Saudi G20 Presidency. His technical support led to the establishment of the Circular Carbon Economy – National Program.

A major element of Al-Juaied’s KAUST research work involves developing and demonstrating an innovative cryogenic carbon capture rig capable of providing up to 0.25 tonne/day of CO2 separation from flue gases. The technology is on track for field scale testing at the Rabigh HFO power plant (owned by Saudi Electric Company). He is also working closely with the KAUST team to scale up and demonstrate a 30 tonne/day CO2 capture system from a natural gas combined cycle at the Duba Green power plant located in the NEOM giga-project. An additional project involves establishing a CO2 subsurface storage atlas and a CO2 emissions database for the Kingdom, and an interactive platform to integrate, analyze, and visualize this data.

Al-Juaied’s time at the Belfer Center will primarily be spent engaged in collaborative work with the Center’s research team working on climate and energy policy, contributing to the work on CCUS, siting of such facilities in Saudi Arabia and other oil-producing countries, and the policy implications of CCUS in helping countries reach the goals of the Paris Accord.

Al-Juaied received an MS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, an MS degree in Petroleum Engineering and a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering, both from the University of Texas at Austin. He also completed the Mason Fellow Program in Public Policy and Management at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was a 2008–2009 Visiting Scholar with the Belfer Center's Energy Technology Innovation Policy research group where he focused on the economics and policies of CCUS.
